The main research topics of UTA-DIH include maternal and child health (especially malnutrition) in low-income countries. Field work is mostly done in Mangochi District, Malawi, where University of Tampere Medical School, in collaboration with College of Medicine, University of Malawi, has established a rural research site in association with a government health centre. Smaller research projects are carried out in Finland and Bangladesh.
