Background and aims of REFINNO

The REFINNO research program investigates the potential of organizational reflectivity in terms of business performance. The program is a joint venture between its funders Tekes (the Finnish funding agency for technology and innovation), four Finnish universities and the participating companies. REFINNO’s multi-disciplinary team includes researchers of cost-accounting, performance measurement, innovativeness, competence development, strategic management, working life research, reflective learning and intervention methods. The study engages the notion of reflective capability to the discussion on how competence development and management can support innovativeness and performance in organizations. Future productivity, but more substantially innovativeness will rely on capabilities to sustain human motivation, commitment, individual and collective ability and willingness to re-think old habits as well as capabilities of dialogue. Competence development needs to be challenged to ensure that there exists individual, collective and organizational ability to actively search for new perspectives and critically question the taken-for-granted assumptions. Contribution of the research REFINNO aims to clarify the interplay between competence management (e.g. development of reflective capability and innovative capability), management control systems, and performance management. The main objective is to explicate how the development of reflective capability and innovative capability can impact on innovativeness and performance of the organizations. The essential questions are, whether the explicit development of reflective capability can affect the way the management control systems and performance management are used, and how the reflectivity develops through the management control systems and performance measurement. Building on extensive review of literature on management control and performance management, we argue that reflective capability holds significant potential for competence development, which in turn affect innovativeness and performance. Case organizations and interventions REFINNO has in-depth case studies and interventions in three business environments. The organizations all represent different fields of operation: health care, pharmaceutical and retail sectors. REFINNO constructs a preliminary framework through which the organizations’ reflective practices can be analyzed and developed, thus supporting their sense-making in various change challenges.
